Carbide buttons are widely used in mining, quarrying, and excavation operations due to their high hardness, strength, wear resistance, and single-tooth impact toughness. However, without mastering the correct usage methods, they are prone to abnormal damage such as chipping or breaking. So, what factors should be considered for proper use of carbide button ?

Select the Appropriate Grade Based on Rock Formation Characteristics: Before use, thoroughly understand the hardness, density, and other properties of the target rock. Different grades of carbide ball teeth (e.g., YG6, YG8, YG11C) are suited for varying rock hardness levels. Improper selection -such as using an insufficiently strong grade in high hardness rock - can easily cause tooth breakage or fracture.

Employ Scientific Operating Methods:

Avoid brute force operation: Do not apply excessive pressure during hole initiation. Never use the drill bit to pry loose rocks or continue drilling with dull ball teeth.

‌Control rotation speed and feed rate: When drilling high hardness rock (e.g., quartzite), reduce rotation speed (typically to several dozen RPM) and maintain feed rate at approximately 0.1 to 0.2 mm per revolution. This minimizes centrifugal force, vibration, and cutting pressure to prevent ball tooth fracture.

‌Smooth operation: Initiate and stop the drill smoothly. Avoid sudden impacts of the drill bit on the workpiece or failing to reduce feed rate promptly when encountering geological structure changes.‌

Ensure Adequate Cooling and Lubrication: Carbide is prone to thermal cracking at high temperatures, shortening its lifespan. Sufficient water-based coolant must be used for cooling and lubrication during drilling. Adjust coolant flow rate based on drill bit size and processing speed (e.g., 5-10 liters per minute recommended for stone processing). Maintain continuous flushing from the start of operation to prevent abrupt temperature fluctuations in the drill bit.

Prioritize Maintenance:

Regular inspection: Check ball tooth wear after each use. Replace or regrind immediately if wear exceeds one-third of the tooth height, or if chipping, flaking, or cracking occurs.

‌Cleaning and Storage:‌ Thoroughly remove debris and coolant residue from the drill bit after use; ultrasonic cleaning is recommended. Store in a dry, well-ventilated environment to prevent rust or corrosion.‌

‌Avoid Abnormal Damage:‌ Never use carbidebutton for purposes beyond their design specifications, such as prying or endure unexpected impact loads.‌
